Planters and Containers: Your New Garden Gems!
Planters and containers made from ordinary objects? You bet. Oh, the choices you’ll have to upcycle, reclaim and repurpose! Don’t let your first impulse for embedding plants, seeds and bulbs be strictly terra cotta, plastic or ceramic from your local home improvement store. Consider more out-of-the-ordinary options!
Pretty Pallet Gardens
Joe Lamp’l, the host of Growing a Greener World on PBS, offers instructions for creating a pallet garden using landscaping fabric and a staple gun (and dirt and plants!). His pallet garden will be mounted to a wall, but you can also see what a freestanding pallet garden with triangle “legs” looks like.
City Scape Gardener, created a video tutorial for another vertical garden sawing off parts of the pallet to form alternating rectangular containers and painting it for a more finished look. City Scape’s directions look easy enough for a beginning DIYer, and if you’re pallet poor, The Balance offers five great sources of pallets for your project.

Flea Market Gardening
We love Flea Market Gardening with its scores of unusual finds at flea markets transformed into garden art and planters. Like old metal tool boxes. And wheel barrels. And bicycles. All sorts of things you wouldn’t consider traditional (or even untraditional!) planters become magical garden décor in these gardeners’ handy hands. A little buffing, some stenciled lettering, and a discarded galvanized steel toolbox is transformed into a receptacle for roses!
Miniature Chairs
Antique potty chairs (look before you judge!) are perfect planters because they already have a built-in hole for the pots! Doll-sized chairs make charming plant holders, as well, as these samples by Nancy Ondra and the DIY Network prove.
Accessory Planters
Purses and hats, shoes and boots – anything in your closet could be a planter! Don’t believe it? Look at what some scissors and a little imagination can do to cover and enclose your pretty foliage and flowers!
Paint Cans to Match
Censational Girl created these outdoor hanging planters from new (or use recycled) paint cans from the hardware store. Using hooks, she hung them from her white picket fence for a charming collection of colorful containers. DIY Network did something similar with paint cans for an indoor herb garden with matching, color-coordinated paint-stirrer labels.
