SOAR ABOVE ADVERSITY
Put on your boots and bling for the annual Soar Above Adversity fundraiser, with a delectable Italian dinner and live auction to benefit Eagle’s Nest Ranch, a horse ranch ministry in Elizabeth. Eagle’s Nest serves veterans, first responder families and others facing physical and emotional challenges. Slated to speak: a Gulf War marine who has been positively impacted by the group’s Healing Horses for the Armed Forces program. All funds raised will be used to help people overcome adversity with the healing power of horse therapy — offered to them free of charge.

VIEW FROM ABOVE
Sometimes, a little distance is all you need to see things in a new way. For astronaut Terry Virts, his newfound perspective was from the International Space Station (ISS), where he installed the Cupola module, granting an unprecedented 360-degree view of outer space from the station. When he later became the commander of the ISS, he made good use of the Cupola, taking more photographs than any astronaut who came before him. Many of those images were later used in the National Geographic book View from Above and IMAX film A Beautiful Planet.

TCHAIKOVSKY 5
Each October, the Pikes Peak region celebrates Arts Month, an annual initiative that raises awareness for the quality, diversity and value of the arts in our community. The Colorado Springs Philharmonic will present Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony as part of this celebration. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky battled extreme cycles, tied to frequent bouts of deep depression and self-doubt. In mid-May 1888, he wrote to his brother Modest that he was convinced he had composer’s block and felt neither the impulse nor the inclination to compose. But by the end of the summer, inspiration visited Tchaikovsky and he finished the massive Fifth Symphony. A preconcert lecture begins one hour before the performance.

DISCOVERIES IN GEOLOGY
The beautiful Cherokee Castle, built in 1926, features rhyolite stone formed when a volcanic eruption about 90 miles away flowed into Douglas County, layering volcanic ash 15 to 20 feet deep. The resulting rhyolite was quarried on this property and from other quarries in nearby Castle Rock. Dr. Al Koch will discuss the remarkable geology that he has mapped on the Cherokee Ranch and its significance to the Denver Basin. The presentation is free to the public although on-line reservations are required.

ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW
Golden Globe-winning actor Barry Bostwick is coming to the Pikes Peak Center to kick off the 40th Anniversary Rocky Horror Picture Show Film Screening Party. The event features a shadowcast – live actors performing each scene along with the film. Fans will have the opportunity to view the film and shadowcast performance, enter a costume contest judged by Bostwick and hear behind-the-scenes stories as Barry Bostwick takes the stage and engages in a talkback with audience Q&A.
