Learn How with WikiHow
WikiHow is a free app available for iOS and Android and can help you figure out how to fix broken plastic, care for orchids, remove a scratch from stainless steel, fix a dryer, light a pilot light – almost anything imaginable – with step-by-step instructions, videos and tips.
WikiHow app users can browse through and search categories and bookmark specific how-to info for later reading. One added feature the iOS version has is a Survival Kit with a collection of first aid and survival guides. These come pre-loaded so you can go to them offline in a nanosecond when you need them.
Family Handyman at Your Fingertips
You would expect Family Handyman to have an app, wouldn’t you? Well, they do! And while the online magazine has home improvement and DIY how-tos, the Family Handyman DIY Tip Genius app has 3,800 bits of DIY wisdom at your fingertips. With techniques, secrets from the pros, and expert-authored guides, there’s even a “tip of the day,” in the app on everything from plumbing and painting to electrical repairs and more.

If you want to know how the various systems in your house actually work, this informative app can help. How Your House Works is based on the book from Wiley Publishing and details everything from air conditioning systems and plumbing (all the pieces, parts and connectivity) to all sorts of appliances and garden equipment. The app has easy-to-follow illustrations and searchable keywords. This app for Android and iOS is $2.99 and armed with it and a little elbow grease you can save a little or a lot of money on contractor costs.

Hang a picture fast with the app that turns your phone or tablet into a handy set of tools. The bubble level bar lets you check flat surfaces; the plumb bob allows you to check vertical lines; the steel protractor lets you measure angles up to 180 degrees, and an onscreen ruler measures in inches and centimeters. Only for iOS.
How to Fix Your Digital Device
IFixit is a DIY app that Reuters says, “Demonstrates the old-fashioned virtue of repair, extending the lifespan of devices.” Available for Android, this app has downloadable guides on how to fix digital devices from computers, tablets and phones, to game consoles and cameras. The app also includes a helpful link to iFixit’s own online parts store, too.
Need a Fast Fix?
Not everybody has the time to unstop a backed-up sink or dishwasher or find and replace a fuse in the circuit breaker box, so now there’s an app to connect you with the right contractor for the job.
