What to Hang Above Your Sofa!
Photographs, mirrors, artwork, clocks, 3-D mementos – the options for decorating the wall above your sofa are endless. But which part of your signature style also complements your interior décor? Take a look at a few of the latest looks for one that speaks to you.
Decorative Mirrors to Magnify
A mirror anywhere in your house can create the optical illusion that your space is twice the size. Even if that’s not your aim, mirrors, can provide a needed punch above your sofa.
The ones at Bed, Bath and Beyond in Parker, 13 miles from Crystal Valley, are both understated and bold in pewter, copper and wooden frames and more. Don’t feel like you have to stick with rectangles and ovals either. The Spruce shows off statement mirrors, over-sized ornate mirrors, and gallery displays with a mirror as the anchor.
SF Gate offers tips on hanging mirrors (as close to eye level as possible for furniture less than 30 inches high). And since balance is critical in interior design, if your mirror (or work of art) is wider than your couch, consider adding two end tables that reach the height of the armrests on either side to increase the visual width of your furniture.
Blogger Kris at Driven by Décor shows off a couple of oversized mirrors that ironically do not overpower their living rooms. You’ll see some eye-popping (four-figure) designs from Restoration Hardware as well as a few unusual options from Pottery Barn, too.
Castle Rock Interior Designer Heather Sheridan of the Decorating Den says “If you have a neutral-colored sofa, I would recommend incorporating colorful art above the sofa that compliments colors in an area rug or throw pillows in that room. If you have a colorful sofa or sofa with a print, you may want to consider metal or wood wall accessories above the sofa.”
Paintings and Photographs
If your son or daughter is as talented as the four-year-old artist who’s already sold 38 paintings and is the youngest artist in 40 years to show at the ArtExpo New York, you can hang your child’s art. And, HGTV advises, don’t be afraid to display your own creative expressions, whether a favorite photo printed on canvas, or watercolor/oil painting.
What could be more unique and YOU, than something that sprang from your own imagination and artistic point of view.
Treasured Objects
Art, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder and if you have a treasured collection of musical instruments, sporting equipment, or vacation mementos who’s to say the wall above your sofa isn’t the best place for it? Whether you hang them right on the wall, or install simple shelving.
Shelves that span the visual width of your couch, can also hold mementos and create an interesting 3-D scrapbook with highlights from the journey of your lives.
Windows and Bookcases
Nate Berkus decorates walls above sofas with large scale artwork, and also with windows and furniture. It’s so simple, he says, to let a window frame your sofa, and your window coverings are curtains, when closed you have a beautiful textured backdrop. Speaking of texture, Desire to Inspire gives you a glimpse of what a colorful, rug looks like above your sofa (scroll down!).
A bookcase, with the back “wall” painted a bright color, can brighten a space without eclipsing everything else in the room. Or as Houzz depicts with stacked photo ledges and multiple black and white photos, a backdrop with images that you can switch out is perfect for noncommittal types!
