Weekend Decorating Projects
As much as you love your interior décor – after all you picked it, right?, and arranged everything just “so” – sometimes you need a change. And when you can exercise your imagination instead of pulling a cookie-cutter something off a shelf or ordering sight-unseen online, why not create something one-of-a-kind? Especially if you can do it in a weekend?!
We curated some of our favorite weekend projects for interior décor – many of which we’ve never seen before – so you can put your own signature spin on them. From a lampshade with your own artistic water color border, to a stunning starburst mirror replicating retail – take a day and let your creative juices boil over!
Rugged Glam: Mirrors, Pendants & More
You could buy something just like this at Pottery Barn for a bunch o’ moola, or you can spend $25 and make one yourself. A 12-inch round mirror costs $5 at Michaels (on Allen Way in Castle Rock), and then there’s jute twine, painter’s tape and nails – all of which you can pick up at the Home Depot, also on Allen Way. The step-by-step instructions at Good Housekeeping make the project look easy and fun, and like it could go anywhere in a house.
Galvanized pendant lights from Country Living have a certain rugged charm of their own, and all you need is a light cord kit and the tin “pendants”. We found some we like better at Home Depot – these galvanized steel “buckets”. Turned upside-down, they’re the perfect combination for rugged glam.
Get out your watercolors and embellish a plain lampshade for a one-of-a-kind accessory. Better Homes and Gardens shows you how. And you can snazz up some terra cotta pots the Spruce way with painted stripes, or go all out for a terrazzo look, with some help from DIY Network.
Color Coordinate
From Sugar & Cloth comes this easy one-day project: color coordinate your books. We think this is based on the premise that you’re not pulling them off the shelves regularly, so you don’t need to hunt one down without its recognizable jacket. But it does give a cohesive look and feel to your collection – and if you have some bright colors, all the prettier. New York interiors photographer Nicole Franzen, shoots eclectic interiors and you’ll see bookcases with alternating books and accessories on her website for a bit of quick décor do-over inspo.
Wall Space: Ladders & Frames
If you’d like a place to hang your cool cranium toppers (hats) or a planter or comfy throw blanket, check out this DIY tutorial from I SPY DIY. The ladder (some available on Amazon just for this multi-functional décor purpose) offers places and spaces to create a cool functional vibe.
You can make over a builder-grade light switch cover just by adding a fancy frame with these instructions from HGTV. It’s so easy, you don’t even really need instructions! Just pick up a picture frame at a discount or Good Will store and attach it to the wall with adhesive putty for high-brow finished look.
Frame shelves are another unusual and creatively artsy way to hang a shelf anywhere you want in a cool and clever way. Shanty Chic grouped four shelves of varying sizes and frame profiles – painted them all white and used them for displaying sculpture, books and office supplies over a desk.
Shelves and Galleries
Stencil a table on your wall and add a floating shelf – it’s functional art! Decoholic shows the four-part process. Another floating shelf of books will put a smile on your face and on your guests’. DIY & Crafts shows you how to install one of your own invisible bookshelves with a video tutorial.
Gallery walls can be right-now trendy or oh-so-yesterday, depending on the size of the frames, artwork and arrangement. Good Housekeeping shows one way to do it right, creating the drama of a major piece of art, with inexpensive prints displayed in a tight grid of beautiful frames. DIY Network, featuring the handiwork of designer Nina Nash, shows off combination of big statement canvas with mixed framed artwork and what look like clay baskets and an antelope skull with horns (a replica of which is at Home Depot!).
