DIY a Holiday Table Centerpiece!

POSTED December 10, 2019

Before your family gathers for the main meal this holiday season, consider these ideas for table settings and centerpiece décor. Whether your dinner table is round, square or rectangular, these DIY holiday centerpieces are festive enough to grace any tabletop for Christmas, Hanukkah AND New Year’s dinners.

You’re going to need fresh greenery, pinecones and candles, for lots of these ideas, so get your clippers ready. If you have a silver serving tray you can create a tiny Christmas tree centerpiece with boxwood clippings and a tea cup. (And if you don’t, it’s a good excuse to go thrift store shopping right now at Treasures on Park Street!)

You can get fresh boxwood clippings from Etsy for $25, or Michael’s carries the artificial variety at The Shoppes store in Castle Rock. Attach silver sprinkles – like the tiny sugar balls used to decorate cakes — a few pinecones and acorns – silver-painted, of course – and a sprig of cedar. HGTV presents 35 more ideas for eye-catching centerpieces, including red and white candy cane-inspired ornaments and a simple cylindrical glass vase with a dozen or so pussy willow branches and a sparkly serving dish holding glittery ornaments and surrounded by sprays of eucalyptus.

Berries, Ribbons and Lights

It took Amanda at A Piece of the Rainbow 10 minutes to put together this Christmas centerpiece once she assembled all the pieces and parts. She started with a wooden crate to hold everything, but you can use a bucket or basket – anything that will hold the candles and shrub clippings. For greenery, she used evergreens plus berries – you can use cedar, spruce, magnolia, boxwood or holly and add a few pinecones. And you don’t need floral foam unless you plan to transport this one, just a few LED fair lights or a mason jar and pillar candle.

We suppose you could plop a few wrapped presents in the middle of the table and call it a day, but HGTV designers took floral foam boxes and hot-glued sheet moss to them. Editors stacked two mossy boxes on either side of a brown craft-paper-wrapped “gift box” in the middle, and tied them up with a bright red Christmas ribbon. The trio of presents, placed on a serving dish, is surrounded by tree ornaments to finish the look.

Serving Trays, Dishes and Bowls

A red serving tray, layered with a mini-grapevine wreath, smallish pinecones and red Christmas amaryllis flowers, surrounds a glass candleholder and pillar candle. This 15-minute centerpiece doesn’t have to break the bank, and it’s pretty without being too difficult to achieve. Like this rectangular serving dish with square candles and cranberries dusted with artificial snow!

A wooden bowl, atop a round wooden cutting board, creates a “pedestaled” vessel for winter white spider chrysanthemums, white football mums and white garden mums. A pillar candle arrayed with pine branches and pinecones still attached, contrasts nicely with gray-green dusty miller in this Midwest Living rustic-meets-elegance striking winter whites centerpiece.

Depending on the color scheme of your table settings and your own signature style, there are 100 more DIY ideas using colorful ornaments, glass bottles and beaded garland, boughs of artificial evergreen, mini-to-maxi candles and fresh fruit for both easy and extravagant centerpieces. Use what you have handy in your holiday storage boxes to add some Christmas cheer to the most wonderful time of the year!
