Never Paint With These Colors!
Paint makes the house! If you get tired of the wall color in your home (and who doesn’t, eventually?) a fresh coat of paint is a low-cost way to freshen up your home. But if you’re thinking about resale someday, there are a few unexpected colors to avoid.
Zillow Digs evaluated more than 50,000 photos of just-sold homes and found houses with these colors sold for less than predicted.
Gray Paint: Is It for You?
Gray is fashionable right now, but not all grays are created equal. While dove or light gray has been a hit in living rooms and can boost a home’s selling price by $1,104, dark gray was a washout. If you paint your home’s dining room too dark, you could lose $1,112 when it comes time to sell.
Whites and Off-Whites
Black and white rooms remain a bold design statement, but steer clear of all white or even off-white, especially in the kitchen. White seems like a safe bet since it “goes with everything,” but the truth is the color in a smaller room can devalue your home!
Zillow Digs found that homes with kitchens painted white or off-white sold for $82 less than the predicted estimate. Historically, white has been a go-to kitchen color, but lately say design experts, white can make a small room look flat and lifeless.
Dark Brown
You may think chocolate brown is rich and sumptuous-looking, but bedrooms painted that color sold for $236 less than expected, and homes with the same shade in a bathroom saw the final price lowered by $469.
Green…Sort Of
Interior designers can’t stop talking about how much they hate Pantone 448 C also known as the world’s ugliest color. It’s a dark green, like the color of an old army blanket. Houses with bedrooms painted this color brought $236 less than the expected price, and bathrooms in the world’s ugliest color brought $469 less.
Cash Colors
So, which colors bring home the bacon? The same Zillow Digs report shows that buyers loved kitchens with a coat of wheat-yellow paint on the walls, which boosted a home’s selling price by $1,360.
Soft sage green or khaki-painted bedrooms elevated a home’s sales price by $1,332, and coincidentally pair well with neutrals AND pops of color.
Smoky lavender might seem like an odd paint choice for a dining room, but if you pick the right color, it can add as much as $1,122 to the sales price. Better Homes and Gardens revealed THIS hue of paint, Purple Verbena, is the 2017 Color of the Year – especially down under.
